Abstract

The reduction of the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is a consequence of an occlusal imbalance that occurs after tooth loss. The restoration of the maxillomandibular relationship is crucial for the success of oral rehabilitation, thus returning the aesthetics, lost function and quality of life to the patient. A simple, economic and faster alternative treatment for partially edentulous patients with occlusal plane changes and reduction of VDO is overlay, a type of prosthesis that seeks support on the occlusal surface of one or more teeth. This study reports a clinical case performed during the undergraduate course in Dentistry at Getúlio Vargas Polyclinic of University of Uberaba, showing the importance and technical feasibility of removable partial prosthesis with macro support in reestablishing the patient’s VDO. From in the findings in the literature and in the reported clinical case, it can be concluded that removable partial prosthesis with macro support represent an important alternative in the treatment of patients with VDO reduction and consequent reestablishment of the functions of the stomatognathic system with conservative and reversible aspects.
