Abstract

I examine Aristotle’s description of scientific knowledge in Posterior Analytics 71b 9-12and try to understand how it relates to sophistical way of knowing an to knowledge katasumbebekos. I claim that Aristotle’s criteria for scientific knowledge includes therequirement of knowing p by its apropriate cause, and that this appropriate cause is auniversal (katholou) in the restricted meaning Aristotle proposes in 73b 26-27 ff., that is,an attribute convertible with the subject (an extensional feature) and predicated of thesubject in itself (an intensional feature). Knowledge kata sumbebekos can occur evenwhen the predicate of a conclusion is convertible with its subject and is proved by aconvertible meson, but it is not proved by means of the relevant adequate meson.
