Resumo

Propõe-se aqui uma discussão sobre a construção intelectual na arqueologia de um conceito que ficou conhecido como “Região Sudoeste” (EUA) – suas supostas fronteiras e suas principais características, que, a princípio, as diferenciariam de outras regiões (tal como a Mesoamérica, ao sul). Para tanto, considerou-se importante investigar o estabelecimento da concepção de “área cultural” – sua importância conceitual na antropologia e na arqueologia americana desde o início do século XX. No caso do estabelecimento das “fronteiras” da “área cultural Sudoeste”, nota-se que este foi permeado por crenças de tons preconceituosos, que, em suas muitas facetas de modo geral, consideraram a área como uma “exclusão” do que não era mesoamericano - ou como uma área na qual grupos supostamente “intelectualmente inferiores” habitaram.
