Abstract

The authors studied the evolution of the tcaching of Public Health Education ín the São Paulo's School of Hygiene anel Puhlic Health, dividing it in the following periods: I - Period from 1925 to 1939: - In 1925, as therc was only one School of Nursing in the country, located in Rio de Janeiro, Professor Dr.G.H. de Paula Souza, at thc time Director of thc State Public Health Department anel Professor of Hygicne of thc School of Mcdicine, created a Course for Public Hcalth Educators sclecting for it elemcntary schoolteachers.These, after one year's course, would held activitics in the local Training Health Unit, created at the same time. Although there was already existcd a subject named "Ethic, Education and Sanitary Administration", special health education lecturcs werc not given. II - Period from 1940 to 1945: - Thc subject Health Education was created for this course in 1939 and during this pcriod it was given by professionals that held other activitics. Some of these occasional professional were graduated from thc Health Educators Coursc, others had taken courses of nursing in the Unitcd States or Canada.III - Period from 1946 to 1950: - In this period students were also admitted in the Public Health Education Course with certificate from seven ycars 1-ligh School Course. During this time, there wcrc two manifcstations about thc advisability of refonns in the Public Health Educators Course, by the professionals working in Children's Park (playground), and one by the Public Health Educators Association. Lectures on Sociology and Social Psychology began also being given in the Public Health Educators Course to help thc professional formation. Technicians from Point IV and from "Serviço Especial de Saúde Pública" discussed twice in the Public Health School, the planning of modifications about the Course above mentioned. The teaching of health education continued heing given by puhlic health educators who had worked in the Training Health Unit.IV - Pcriod from 1951 to 1956: - This period w as noted by large modifications in the teaching of health education for the Puhlic Health Educators Course and hy atkmpts to introduce this subject in other courses of the School of Public Health. The Point IV put at the School of Public Health's disposition, since 1954, a United States Public Health educator, who worked four years as consultor. In 1955 a course of Sanitary lnspectors was created and for the first time the Health Education subject was officially introduced in a new course. V - Period of 1957: - lt was characterized by: a) the introduction of Puhlic Health Education suhject in ali former courses and in the new courses created under the Department of Public Health Technic; h) the initiative of having a staff for this particular purpose under the supervision of a specialized assistant; and c) the attempts to reorganize the public health education activities of the Training Health United.Public Health Education is given now jointly for the Graduate Courses of Public Health for physicians, dentists, veterinarians, nurses and engineers. lt is also given for Sanitary lnspectors and Nutritionists students. The staff for teaching Public Health Education is formed by an Assistant of lhe Department of Public Health Technic with the title of Master in Puhlic Health, specialized in Health Education University of California, by a Puhlic Health Educator technician (University of Puerto Rico), and hy a third one wlw studied at the North Carolina University; a Public Health Educator with the Puhlic Health Education Course from São Paulo specialized in audio-visual technique due to the cooperation of technicians from Point IV; two other puhlic health educators help as "monitores" in the mentioned teaching. A new Health Education Program is heing planned in the Training Health Unit, for students who receive practical expcrience.
