In this article we analyze the dissensions that existed not only among the political elite but also among Brazilian Army's high officers concerning the elaboration and execution of distinct regular troops "nationalization" plans. This analysis enables the perception that the gestation of the country's two main political parties was simultaneous to the birth of different opinions about the Armed Forces' role in the national scene, which have been expressed in different proposals of rupture towards some aspects peculiar to the Portuguese Ancien Régime still present in the military institution during the Regency period (1831-1840).Downloads
