Abstract

The morphologic studies on the genus Maranhites Brito 1965, under light and scanning electron microscopy, show new data about this genus, which is very abundant mainly in Upper Devonian sediments. Considering the new data, we propose the generic emend, as well as those of the species M. brasiliensis (Type species) and the M. mosesii. We also propose the formation of five new species: M. magnus, M. primus, M. toigoi, M. lobulatus and M. insulatus. We have got the analysed samples through core-drilling RSP-1, drilled in the Serra da Petrovina region, on the South of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The sampling sedimentary sequence, aged Givetian-Upper Frasnian stage, is from Ponta Grossa Formation of the Paraná Basin.
