This special issue originated with the question: "how do you prohibit a plant?". It aimed to analyze processes of prohibition and/or legalization of drugs of plant origin in Latin American terms. The words gathered in this issue observe these processes and their transformations in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Mexico. However, they do not abandon a critical look at the possible negative consequences of the contemporary legislative modifications, which do not leave aside the logic or criminalization and can create new forms of exclusion. We opened a space for discussion about a topic of urgent debate and hope to witness, with due critical reflection and the presence of the various agents involved, the development of paths of regularization that guarantee the reduction of harm caused by the war on drugs.
