Abstract

The present work aims to problematize and historicize the current situation of Flavio de Carvalho’s Casa Modernista da Fazenda Capuava, and the impossibility of its public use. To this end, the starting point was a brief history of the artist’s activity in the field of architecture and the features of his modernist house. Next, we identified the barriers that arose after the artist’s death, the process of granting the building its historical and cultural heritage status, and the promises made by the municipality of Valinhos. Finally, as a conclusion, we develop the questions presented, while relating them with the urban development path taken by the municipality – the expansion of private areas to the detriment of public spaces – demonstra- ting how art and politics cross each other in this case, making the space a territory under dispute.
