Abstract

The article seeks to demonstrate how vernacular architecture was treated as an idealized image of the aspirations of Brazilian modernist architects. Chosen as a symbol for the synthesis between tradition and modernity, it became an icon of the modernist vision of the Brazilian architectural past. Nevertheless, it was also used as a methodological tool for the reconstitution of unknown aspects of the history of building techniques, thus corroborating controversial restoration projects.
