Abstract

This article analyzes São Jorge dos Erasmos Sugar Mill, localized in São Vicente, santista seaside, since earliest days of colonization, as expression of the direction and meanings of the modernization in Portuguese America. As a witness of modernization in process it is expression of the simultaneous and negative way that form the modernization´s categories in the colony, chiefly labor. To this extent, the process has a simultaneous dimension - spatial determination - as a whole, whose condition is the temporal negativity to that categorical formation in what Sugar Mill contributes in the reflexion.
