Abstract

The article deals with the decisive influence of Japanese engraving on the work of Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. Avid collector, Van Gogh collects over 400 prints that offer a large volume of material for study and reflection. From the apprehension of Japanese art the painter seeks new creative impulses, an escape from the conventions of Western education and a path of renewal of Impressionist French art. The text also elucidates the way Van Gogh translated the Provencal themes of Arles, southern France, into the context of Japanese aesthetics.
