Descartes' Regulae and the reform of logic in the 17th century

Abstract

Closely following Robert Blanché’s characterization of modern logic in his book The History of Logic from Aristotle to Bertrand Russell, I intend to show how Descartes’s Regulae paradigmatically instantiate some of the main characteristics of reformed logics, which are typical of that historical moment. Blanché himself offers several examples of Descartes’s belonging to this context. I intend to contribute to the discussion by carrying out a more detailed examination of the final part of Rule X, in which a certain notion of mental activity emerges that is connected not only to the criticisms of mathematics, in the Discours de la Méthode, but also to the argument of the cogito, in the Meditationes.
