Abstract

Essay focused on the war started by Zé Bebelo in Grande
sertão: veredas, whose cause is founded on an idealized
comprehension of modernity. According to this
conception, the redemption of the sertanejos’ miserable
condition would only be possible if a revolutionary action
could supplant the jagunços’ power through republican
order. The reverse of this social-political view fi nds
in Rubem Fonseca’s short stories “Intestino grosso”
and “O Cobrador” some examples of demystifi cation
of a utopian modernity and of a violent strategy of
social inclusion in the universe of consumption. Such
contraposition reiterates a perception of a future that is
no longer how it used to be.
