Abstract

This paper analyzes the first Paulo Freire ’s books, Educação como prática de liberdade and Pedagogia do Oprimido, with the intent to reconstruct his political practice from some key - concepts: his theory of history, his conception of subject and his political conceptions based on the idea of autonomy, rooted on Freire’s  experiences in popular education. We intend to articulate his thoughts to the discussions inside the left about social classes, class consciousness and its representation, evaluating what is the role of leaderships in these processes and that of the oppressed as subjects of their own emancipation. To achieve such objective, we compare Freire ’s concepts with those from the historian E. P. Thompson and the philosopher Hannah Arendt.
