Abstract

The aim of this systematic review was to identify the effect of different intermittent fasting protocols on muscle strength performance. Searched by two researchers independently were performed in electronic databases and repository: Pubmed, Scielo, Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Studies carried out in humans (≥18 years) that evaluate the Ramadan Intermittent Fasting or Time-Restricted Feeding (ART) protocols in different muscle strength tests were included. A total of 1584 studies were selected and after completing all selection steps, only 19 articles were included in this review. The study comprises a total sample of 486 participants, with a predominance of males 91.8% (n = 446), of the scientific intermittent fasting protocols, ~ 79% (n = 15) used Ramadan and ~ 21% (n = 4) the ART; muscle strength performance was evaluated through the maximum dynamic and isometric strength of different muscle groups from the tests: 1 Maximum repetition (1RM), handgrip strength (FPM), maximum isometric voluntary contraction (CVIM); and power, in different jump tests. In general, the results of the results that make up this review are unanimous outcomes for the 1RM and HGS tests, with no studies resulting from intermittent fasting in the performance of muscle strength when measured by these tests, contrary to the power performance and the CVIM results are conflicting. Considering that even with most studies adopting the same fasting protocol and stratifying the assessment by specific type of strength, greater uniformity in the results was expected, which was not found.
