Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the impact of the pandemic stoppage on the mood and routine of high-performance athletes during social isolation, and after returning to sports practices, based on tests carried out in a professional club. Also compare training load and injury incidence in the previous season with that performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fourteen members of a professional male volleyball team in Juiz de Fora - MG were included during the period from December/2020 to March/2021. The selected athletes were followed during the 2020/2021 regular season. Male athletes from the team who are not part of the professional team and athletes from the female team of any category were excluded. For the purpose of comparing the training load and the incidence of injuries between the 2018/2019 and 2020/2021 seasons, historical data from the club itself were obtained. As a result, the training load was 58.2% lower when compared to the 2020/2021 season and the 2018/2019 season. Total mood disturbance decreased over the course of follow-up in 2020/2021, especially in individuals with longer working time. The total number of injuries decreased from 41 in 2018/2019 to 22 in 2020/2021, probably due to the lower training load. In short, the pandemic resulted in negative impacts on the training load of the analyzed athletes. However, it was found that total mood disturbance (PTH) had a progressive reduction in its levels with the return to sports practices. This study brings significant associations on the relationship between professional athletes' leave, their mood (PTH) and performance (training load) in the return to activities.
