Abstract

This paper analyses the effects global impacts have on the territorial, social and economical configuration of the regional development among verticalities and horizontalities, giving emphasis to family farming.  The empirical goal of this study is founded in two different regions: the Rio Pardo Valley region which is located in the heart of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and it has its economy based on the production and processing of tobacco. A process in which family farming plays an important role; Tirol region, a historical region located in the western side of Central Europe, which includes, in Austria, the state of Tirol and, in Italy, the Italian autonomous province of Bolzano, in the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Ádige (Trentino-Südtirol). Verticalities and horizontalities are treated as two different and very important theoretical dimensions for the territorial analysis, and a determiner to understand the dynamics of the studied regions.
