Abstract

Reducing illegal deforestation to zero by 2030 and restoring 12 million hectares of forest are two of the targets assumed by Brazil in the Paris Accord, ratified in 2016. This text analyses the lessons accumulated in the management of the Amazon Fund and in the system of tropical forestry monitoring. It first identifies the causes of deforestation, whose rhythm has begun to accelerate again in recent years. To confront these causes, as well as increasing consciousness of environmental risk, densifying the scientific capesabilities established in the Amazon region is recommended, alongside the development of new human capabilities. Capabilities which allow the articulation of long-lasting actions in the areas of forestry, energy, infrastructure and innovation. Actions that promote new poles of development, stimulate international cooperation and increase the supply of jobs to honour the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 38% by 2035 and overcome the goals aimed for in the sphere of tropical forests.
