This work’s goal is to guide the beginner in oboe’s playing on the preparation of their own reed along with suggestions on how to handle the utensils necessary for this task. We present here a short history of the instrument and its predecessors showing the evolution from the first oboes to the contemporary models. There will also be presented topics such as the cane’s origin, its source, region and procedures on how to go from the cane in natura until the last part of the scraping. In addition, we detailed the canes’ molding and mooring procedure along with its scraping, specially the german kind. We hope to contribute to the craft that leads towards a balanced, flexible and vibrant sounding reed.
