Abstract

The culture of the country of origin of migrant parents brings important elements for the construction of the identity of children born in the host country. This study aimed to understand which elements of Polish and Brazilian cultures were transmitted and how they influenced the construction of the identity of three children (second generation) of a Polish family established in Brazil, based on narratives of the family’s migratory trajectory, life and eating practices. Based on the content analysis, three thematic groups were identified, which pointed to two elements as the main markers of Polish identity: language and food. In everyday life, the daily characteristic Brazilian food was adopted, but Polish food is the protagonist on special dates, featuring ethnic, religious, and family traditions. Although the recipes have been modified, the rituals surrounding their preparation, consumption and conviviality are maintained and this is when Polish identity is manifested. Each child demonstrates different degrees and ways of maintaining these family “traditions”. Other cultural references, their personal trajectories and social support networks added new eating practices, although the feeling of double belonging remains in the second generation. This study allows us to understand how food culture contributes to the identity construction and food trajectory of individuals exposed to different cultures.
