Abstract

The analysis of post-mortem examination data of 194.361 swine carcasses, proceeding from 306 swine breeding municipalities of eight Brazilian states and that had been slaughtered and processed by slaughter houses placed in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), provided the following information: 1. The tuberculosis, cysticercosis and hydatidosis were the diseases of most frequent ocurrence. 2. The wide scattering of these zoonoses in those states considered in this study was confirmed by the presence of cysticercosis in carcasses of pigs proceeding from all eight states, tuberculosis in pigs of seven, and hydatidosis, in swines of 5 states. The distribution of these diseases according to the 306 municipalities traced in this study, was as follows: the tuberculosis occurred in 128 the cysticercosis in 62, and hydatidosis in 45 municipalities, and in 129 municipalities there was no registration of any of these three diseases in their herds, 132 municipalities registered only one disease, while 32 with two, and 13 municipalities were concurrent to the three diseases. 3. The information collected by the meat inspection service, concerned to the detection of pathologic lesions, especially those related to zoonoses, can provide valuable contribution in guiding and choosing the priorities for the adoption of sanitary measures by the Public Health and the Animal Health Authorities.
