Abstract

The article aims to reflect about linguistic phenomena that surround the hick language, by the stories of Geraldo Policiano Nogueira, typical countryside person from the interior of Goiás. We carried out a bibliographical survey to analyze the language, the culture and the society by the sociolinguistic approach, pointing to the prejudice in relation to the way of speaking of many cultural variants: the hick language that – analyzed by listening, transcription and analysis of some Geraldinho’stories – reflects a life context of countless subjects of the region. The discussion also involves the image of the hick that was projected in Goiás, trying to correlate it to the regional history. We consider necessary to change the perspective regarding the varieties present in the Portuguese Language to contribute to the historical, social and cultural understanding of the differences between urban and rural languages.
