Abstract

Developed during a period of lack of classical musical activity in Portugal, the concert societies were an important instrument of audience formation, socializing and diffusion of a vast repertoire, involving agents of various origins, backgrounds, interests and ideologies. In this paper, we focus the Portuguese concert society Sonata, founded in 1942 by Fernando Lopes-Graça and friends and active until 1960, which promoted the national and international première of many works, including Brazilian solo and chamber music. Parting from the contextualization and analysis of this production, we aim to broach the sociability network implied in its circulation, regarding Sonata as a space of articulation between different musical experiences.
