Abstract

This article presents the belly dance scene in São Paulo discussing its artistic status and its means of sustainability. Although globally known, the article focuses on the examination of this dance practice in a specific locality (Robertson, 1992; 1995). In São Paulo, what is emmically called the belly dance “scene” or “market” does not mean a stable arrangement, but results from the continuous work of the people involved, being them providers or consumers. Although turned down in favor of other entertainment options, belly dance is sustained by the constant movement of the involved agents, producing a dynamic and
creative scene capable to overcome the challenges posed by marginality.
