Ivan Turgenev is well known for the novels from his mature phase, dealing with characters from the Russian intelligentsia, like Rudin and Fathers and Sons. However, a significant portion of his other literary works remains unexplored in the Brazilian editorial market. This short story is one example, published in the end of the author’s life, with clear influences from Flaubert’s saint stories and from German Romanticism, bringing with it a unique characteristic within Turgenev's works – a mystic and fantastic atmosphere.
