Abstract

This article deals with the reception of the novel Madame Bovary – in the time it came out to the public in France – in order to discuss the tragic literary composition of the 19th century Realism. As the period reached a wide range of both authors and their works and themes and literary forms, the approach here is the issue of women adultery as a framing theme, to the extent that the debate on the social role of women was too relevant to the bourgeois society of that time. The comparative analysis of the novels Madame Bovary and Anna Karienina, emphasising the latter, orientates the article. Our conclusion is that the tragic frame is the main point of touch between the authors as well as the element that builds up the social realism imaginary, especially in the case of the Russian author.
