Abstract

The meeting of Konstantin Stanislavsky with Leopold Sulerzhitsky, one of his most important collaborators, takes place after Sulerzhitsky attends a rehearsal of the play An enemy of the people, by Henrik Ibsen, at the Moscow Art Theatre, and feels deeply impressed by the performance of Stanislavsky as Dr. Stockmann. From the relationship built between them and from the experiences of the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre, fundamental principles of the Stanislavsky’s System, such as the importance of collective and ethics in art and life, were developed. This article analyzes these principles from the understanding that Stanislavsky and Sulerzhitsky believed that the theatre could be a device of self-improvement and social transformation.
