Abstract

The mutual admiration between the critics Álvaro Lins and Carpeaux transcended the field of literary
and intellectual affinities. Their friendship, born of epistolary correspondence, grew stronger as they
became personally acquainted and was intensified by their journalistic work at Correio da Manhã, and,
above all, by the exchange of ideas established between them. Based on the reflections of Álvaro Lins about
Carpeaux and his work, this article develops some observations concerning their critical thinking, the theme of the exile of the Austrian intellectual as well as his often noted (and misunderstood) erudition.
