Stool specimens from 145 pigs (Sus scrofa domesticas) were examined for investigating the possibility of their infection with Entamoeba histolytica. Ali specimens were negative for cysts of this parasite.Sixty per cent of the pigs showed cysts of Iodamoeba in the stools. A study was made, comparing the morphology om these cysts and that of the lodamoeba from man. As to the structure, the cysts from the two sources were indistinguishable. A difference in the average size of cysts was found when specimens from pigs were compared with the lodamoeba from humans. Considering these facts, the authors believe that the Iodamoeba from pigs can be identified as Iodamoeba bütschlii (Prowazek, 1 912) and that said domestic animais may be an important source of infection of man.Downloads
