Abstract

After a survey of colonial domestic architecture in Brazil (including references to Portuguese vernacular models, indigenous contributions and adaptation to climatic condltions, geograf?hical isolatíon and seggregative behaviour patterns he author describes the main features of the diffuse pattern of rural houses, as wel as its urban counterparts. Eclecticism - with its alienigenous roots - is considered the most important trend 01 change from the second half 01 the 19th - century until the First World War.
