About the Journal

Ars Journal is a  publication of the Graduate Program in Visual Arts of the School of Communications and Arts (ECA) of the University of São Paulo (USP). It assembles relevant works for the arts debate promoted inside and outside the university. With a wide focus on approaching a comprehensive range of issues – as the contemporary art production itself demands –, it aims to contribute to the cultural debate outside the barriers of the university and to question perspectives of art in the contemporary context. At the same time, it values the theoretical contribution of more traditional disciplines such as philosophy, aesthetics and art history – although it is often a question of confronting or pointing out the limits of this tradition in face of contemporary challenges. Ars focus on running, alongside the works of artists, critics, art historians and graduate students of ECA’s Department of Visual Arts, collaborations of researchers, artists, intellectuals and other professionals in the artistic field, favoring experimentation and theoretical specialized research.
Ars currently runs an electronic issue (ISSN 2178-0447).

The journal is indexed in SciELO, LatinIndex, DOAJ and Portal de Revistas da USP.

Journal History

The launching of Ars was preceded by an intense discussion and activities related to the organization of the project, which have been developed since 2002. At the time, the idea of creating a journal was motivated by the realization of an alarming gap of magazines specialized in arts and human sciences in the country that were capable of stimulating intellectual discussions in especially favorable conditions due to its exemption from the interests of a commercial publication.  Ars arose from the desire of contributing to the contemporary art debate, since the issues involving art schools should not remain restricted to the academic environment, but go beyond the barriers of the University and question perspectives of art in the contemporary context. Thus, since its first editions, the journal aims to contribute to create a criticism culture in the Brazilian artistic field, encouraging the work of new generations of researchers and preparing them to intervene in public cultural life.

The first issue of Ars was released in March 2003. Until 2015, it was published every six months by professors Gilberto Prado, Sônia Salzstein, Marco Giannotti, and graphic design by professor Mario Ramiro. From 2017 to 2023, the journal became a four-month publication of the Graduate Program in Visual Arts of ECA-USP.

In 2024, in view of the new guidelines of the indexers, ARS began to adopt the continuous publication model and to launch a single annual volume, bringing together unpublished articles, visual essays and translations.
