Abstract

The present paper aims to discuss the possibilities and limitations of cultural eritage, based on the patrimonialization of folias in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The researchers present the transformations and continuities resulted from the notion of intangible cultural heritage and contrast the institutional experience of the patrimonialization of folias in Minas Gerais with challenges that foliões presented in an academic research carried out simultaneously. The result was a review of the way that process was carried out, as well as the presentation of demands that arise in the face of the recent patrimonialization and the need to consolidate its safeguarding plan. We invite the reader to reflect on the mediating and ambiguous position of the State in relation with the communities that practice those cultural expressions, as well as on the role of safeguarding in the solution of tensions brought about by the patrimonialization itself .
