The present article intends to
contribute to the debate about anthropological
analysis of theatre in contemporary societies.
It analyzes the impact of the Theatre Anthropo-
logy of Eugenio Barba, which despite its global
diffusion and acceptance in the theatre research
area, does not have any anthropological validi-
ty. In opposition to this view, the work of Vic-
tor Turner, giving origin to the Anthropology
of Performance, has been used as an important
support, despite many a-historical, mechanical
and de-contextualized applications. This article
intends to recall the importance of the dimen-
sion of “experience” in Turner’s work, and also
the already classical analysis of Pierre Bourdieu’s
work The Rules of Art.
