An ethnography of two institutionsof cultural preservation shows that the different tre-
atments of their collections reproduces the social re-
lations inherent in the construction of two distinct
intellectual fields. “Popular culture” and “folk art”
are observed from the point of view of the parti-
cipation of involved social actors in the organiza-
tion of the institutionalized collections. included in
these collections salient different forms of the ways
in which art is understood : 1) a field of study in
which the artist and his art are integrated into daily
life, or 2) as a consecration of the value of aesthetic
objects in national and international markets.
