Abstract

This paper analyses memory cons-
truction in two families considered to be traditional
in the context of their hometown, the city of Belém
do Pará, these groups being so judged in virtue of
an exceptional historic trajectory. The central con-
ducting element in such a discussion is social me-
mory, with emphasis on the way it is considered in
the studies by Maurice Halbwachs. Based on the
study of oral and written narratives, a reflection is
made on the ways individual and group trajectories
as well as the links between past and present inte-
ract to form memory structure.
