Here I deal with the beginnings and the development of the Brazilian studies about ethnobiology i.e. the analysis of how societies with oral tradition (mainly Indian ones) perceive, name and classify plants and animals. I also discuss the theoretical perspectives of every study in order to reflect about emic classifications of nature not as formal, self-sufficient systems, but as products of a socialization of the natural species, put into action through activities and cosmological thinking.
