The article discusses the issue of authority involved in anthropological research and power relations at an ethnographic encounter. Unlike other situations commonly discussed by anthropologists who find themselves with more power than the “natives”, the fieldwork situation discussed here involved a group of high standing in Brazilian society: diplomats. Issues such as the idea of auto—anthropology and a preference for totalizing images in anthropological accounts were also discussed.Downloads
