Abstract

Films are important means of inter-
pretation of the social reality: not only they show
this reality, but also they reveal its details and make
possible the transformation in the performance of
individuals. Therefore, the objective of this work is
to present the social theories of Norbert Elias, Georg
Simmel and Sigmund Freud in their points of con-
vergence and divergence, applied to the analysis
of the film Death in Venice, in touch with Thomas
Mann ́s book, regarding mainly the relationship
between the characters Tadzio and Gustav von As-
chenbach. Its main theme is the social repression of
the deep-seated drives and the relationship between
individual and society as a whole in a historical con-
text and its purpose is to try to launch new ques-
tions and some answers aiming at the interaction
between macro and micro sociological levels.
