Sewers, reports, and archaeology: doing ethnography on environmental licensing processes for basic sanitation

Basic sanitation, universal right provided by law, is not constituted only by pipes, treatment stations, meters, valves and other material parts. This infrastructure is also a political terrain where different interests, agents, documents, bureaucracies, and scientific knowledge are entangled. The objective of this article is to think the relation between infrastructure, in this case basic sanitation for sewage treatment, and the scientific practice. I will analyze process related to archaeological researches for the environmental licensing for this kind of enterprise, showing how the different state spheres, bureaucratic procedures, and various concerns and interests influence and are influenced by this game between infrastructure and science
