Abstract

The purpose of the current article is to discuss the ideological roll attributed, by cinematographic criticism, to the movie A Margem (1967), first feature film by Ozualdo Candeias, a moviemaker considered to be the beginner of a movement called Cinema Marginal. After putting on context the main aesthetical and political shocks that occurred in the scope of the movie scene at the film's premiere, we intend to analyze the arguments used by critics that had the purpose of turning A Margem into an instrument of combat against one of the most significant and polemic masterpieces from another movement of that time, CinemaNovo, the film Terra em Transe (1967), by Glauber Rocha.
