Abstract

In the third chapter of The Ethics of Ambiguity [1947], Simone de Beauvoir develops different themes, including the “aesthetic attitude” of the human being towards historical events. This attitude is defined by a pure and contemplative look of the human being in relation to the different human situations in the world, which would result in an attempt to escape the truth of the present and a denial of the human condition. Therefore, considering the current crisis, we intend to show throughout this work not only the relationship between this aesthetic atitude notion and the philosopher's theory of temporality, but also its moral and political implications.
