Abstract

This article aims to problematize the image of Maria Quitéria, a heroine from Bahia, and the appropriation of the character in the Independence narrative, how this figure composes the social imaginary of Brazil as a nation and the differences in narratives due to being a female soldier, when we compare her figure to that of Duque de Caxias, patron of the Brazilian Army. The construction of the figure of Maria Quitéria is influenced by the representation of the prevailing ideas of her time, regarding feminization and a whitening of her features, both in the monument in Salvador at Praça da Soledade and in the painting that portrays her in the Ipiranga Museum. The study will be carried out from the perspective of cultural history and gender analysis category.
