Abstract

The article deals with Água Fria, with the trajectory of this neighborhood within the North Zone of Recife, that before, at the end of the nineteenth century was constituted by a small suburb born of the thriving town of Beberibe, situated on the banks of the river of the same name. Centered on this plan historical, the present article seeks to rescue the second phase of expansion of the neighborhood in the mid-twentieth century, in the light of the modernization process of the suburbs of Recife. It is a moment of construction of the commercial symbol of the place, the Public Market of Água Fria, the main locus of social relations hip of the commercial plot of the neighborhood which confers an identity to the residents in àgua Fria, despite the new models of comsumption and behavior underlying the life of social relations in the metropolis, which exclude the dwellers from their place of experience, of their neighborhood life.
