The creation of contemporary Hebrew literature originated in the Jewish Enlightenment movement, from the end of the 18th century, in Germany, developing throughout the following century and reaching its full realization in the 20th century, in Israel. Berdichevski was one of the great pioneers in the creation of modernized Hebrew, which came to give expression to the Jewish problem in Eastern Europe in its various aspects. The tale translated here is an example of the vigor of the revival of an almost non spoken language.
