In this interview to Comunicação & Educação, Nilma Lino Gomes, former Minister of Racial Equality and Professor Emerita at the Faculty of Education at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), talks about her trajectory as a black woman in places of power. Nilma addresses, among other topics, the intersection between communication and education and the racial issue; the production of academic knowledge arising from social movements, in contrast to the absence of subjects from these places in intellectual production, in addition to reflecting on the use that public universities have made of affirmative actions, especially racial quotas, and their consequences. She also discusses the issue of structural racism and the privileges of whiteness in Brazilian society. Finally, she reaffirms her optimism regarding the future of our country.
