In 1961 the French philosopher Roland Barthes (1915-1980) published the text "Of sport and men", from a Canadian order Hubert Aquin, which carried out a documentary with the same title. The article offers a semiotic analysis of bullfighting in Spain (to which Barthes himself does not know whether includes the sport category), motor racing in the US, cycling in France, the ice hockey in Canada and football in England. Far from the technical terms of science of sport and canonical academic language, Barthes analyzes the meaning and the importance that sport has taken on mass society of the twentieth century, seeking interpretations and correlations between sports practice and the vital needs of man in contemporary society. Our reflections seek counter Barthes' seminal contribution to the works of two other European authors who, years earlier, proposed an original reading about the sport: these are the cases of Johan Huizinga and the book Homo Ludens (1938), and Roger Caillois and Man, Play and Games (1957)Downloads
