FICTION AND AUTHORIAL TRUTH IN OPERACIÓN MASACRE BY RODOLFO WALSH

By considering the tension between reality and fiction in the journalism genres, this paper intends to analyze the aesthetic resources used by Walsh to describe “Marcelo” (the supporting character in Operación Masacre) in comparison to the description of the same person by the newspapers La Nación, from July 12, 1957 and El Plata, from July 11 of the same year. Therefore, we will provide reflections on the concepts of truth and reality, fiction and literature that commonly undelie narratives that represent real stories in order to unveil them so we can better understand the narrative elements that create that tension. By thinking about the narrator’s ethic, we intend to reflect on the following questions: is the author honest when describing his characters? By which means does this “truth” of the author Walsh is forged into the homonymous narrator of Operación Masacre? We undertake the assumption that the construction of the truth will depend not only on the narrator viewpoint – which is not unbiased – but also on the way explored to lend verisimilitude in order to persuade the readers of his truth, as demonstrated in this paper.
