Abstract

It is after two decades of his literary career that Valter Hugo Mãe starts to recall his childhood in Contra mim (2020), his first memoirs book. Published in Brazil in 2020, this literary work that received the Award of the Portuguese Associations of Writers (APE) presents to the reader a panorama of the writer’s childhood and adolescence, that has been since the early years surrounded by the most profound problems of Portugal, country where he grew in. The book can also be seen as a suggestion to analyze the themes that made him a novelist, as well as a revisit to his poetry, despite being not as known to the Brazilian reader.
