Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between memory, desire and space, with reference to Lisbon as it is described by José Cardoso Pires in his book Lisboa - Livro de bordo. Vozes, olhares, memorações. I aim to investigate the problem of the representability of postmodern dematerialized spaces, whether in face of the transformation of places into non-places, either by the erosion of the globalizing world and the consequent impossibility to access the “real” in an unmediated way, ie, through an “ontologically pure” mimesis.
