Abstract

This article aims to contextualize Vitorino Nemésio’s poetic work within the decadent tendency of modernity. We focus on his initial production which is usually associated with his Azorian youth. While reading the poems, we seek to answer the following questions: a) what are the possibilities of reading Modernism by searching its roots in the symbolist-decadent tradition?; and b) how were important topics to the fin-de-siècle assimilated by Modernism and exploited by Nemésio, in establishing intersections and ruptures?
